Several motor shells hit Barawe town amid ongoing lower house election

BARAWE (HOL) - Mogadishu (HOL) - Barawe town was today attacked with several rounds of motor shells amid the election of seven lower house seats from the South-West state was underway.

According to multiple sources in the town, some mortar shells landed near South-West presidential palace, where the election is currently taking place.

No casualties have been reported so far and the authorities have not commented on the attack.

Witnesses confirmed that gunfire was heard in parts of the town with the security forces cordoning off major roads in the city to tighten election security.

No group has claimed the responsibility for the shelling but al-Shabaab had previously carried out such attacks.

Barawe, a coastal town in Lower Shabelle region is located about 220 km from Mogadishu

Somali government backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) had liberated the town in 2014 after fierce fighting with the al-Shabaab militant group which was controlling the town for years.
