Lawmakers approve 2023 federal budget

Thursday December 29, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) –The lawmakers signed off on the $973,985,805 national budget after 172 MPs voted in favour, while one MP abstained, according to the Lower House speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nor Madobe.

138 MPs skipped the session entirely and did not cast a vote.

At least two other sessions in December after less than a hundred members of parliament attended the proceedings, falling well short of the constitutional quorum.

The vote was chaired by Lower House  Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Noor Madobe and Upper House Speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi and their deputies.

The nearly 1 billion national budget will be raised through domestic revenue and international grants, with domestic revenue expected to be $283.3 million in 2023, an increase of $36.3 million from this year.

Somalia's cabinet approved the budget in mid-November.

As with previous years, donors will provide most of Somalia's budget (70%).

The Minister of Finance of the Federal Government of Somalia, Dr. Elmi Mohamud Noor, thanked the Members of Parliament and the parliamentary committee on finance for approving the budget.
