Somali President meets Prince Mohamed bin Salman in Riyadh

Sunday December 11, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Riyadh on Saturday. They discussed strengthening the strained ties between the two countries and enhancing cooperation in the fight against terrorism in Somalia.

Crown Prince Mohammed praised the Somali government forces and local clan militia forces for their achievements in the fight against al Shabab. He expressed his willingness to support the government and the Somali people fully.

For his part, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed the government and people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their support of the Somali people and government, saying that the Federal Government of Somalia attaches particular importance to strengthening relations with the world.

The two sides stressed the importance of stability in the Horn of Africa country and eliminating the Al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group al Shabab who lost hundreds of villages to the Somali government forces and local clan militia forces for the last six months.

President Mohamud, among several heads of state, attended the Arab-Chinese Summit in Riyadh as Arab countries seek to improve cooperation with China and look forward to a new partnership phase.

On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China is ready to assist to the best of its ability for Somalia's reconstruction and social and economic development and encourages the two countries' enterprises to explore cooperation in areas including agriculture, fishery and health.

"The Chinese side always supports Somalia in safeguarding its sovereignty, dignity and territorial integrity, has provided long-term support to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and actively encouraged the international community to support and help Somalia," Xi said.

Mohamud noted that bilateral relations enjoy a long history, saying that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1960, China-Somalia relations have always been based on mutual understanding and respect.

In the past, President Mohamud has enjoyed strong ties with Saudi Arabia. However, Somalia sought to realign itself during the previous administration led by President Farmajo by strengthening relations with Qatar and her allies. During the Gulf Crisis, which pitted Qatar against an alliance consisting of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Bahrain and others. Despite the fact that the Saudis and Emirate pressured Somalia to cut off ties with Qatar, it officially remained neutral in the dispute.
