Galmudug calls for end to clan clashes in Galgadud region

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Galmudug regional state authorities announced that they successfully ended inter-clan fighting that had been going on for the last two days in the northern part of the Galgadud region.

    Galmudug, Minister of Information Ahmed Shire Falagle, told local media on Monday that the state deployed heavily armed security forces to the frontline of the clashes. He expressed deep regret for the casualties caused by the war and called for elders to sue for peace and an end to the conflict.

    At least 20 people were killed in the fighting between two militias from Abudwak and Adado districts in Galmudug state, with the heaviest fighting happening on Sunday. 

    The conflict in Labagale village began with a dispute over a drinking water well.

    He added that Galmudug is working to ensure that conflict does not reoccur and will convene the two sides for negotiations to end the hostilities.

    The fighting comes as Somalia braces for the worst drought in 40 years, particularly in the Jubaland, Southwest, Galmudug states, and parts of Puntland.

    Severe water shortages have also been reported in parts of Galmudug, especially the northern Galgadud region, where the inter-clan fighting took place this week.
