Internet cutoff in Somaliland on morning of opposition protests

Thursday August 11, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Internet connection in the breakaway region of Somaliland has been caught ahead of planned opposition protests scheduled for Thursday morning.

The disconnect was confirmed by NetBlocks, an organization that tracks global network disruptions and shutdowns.

"Real-time network data show the disruption coming into effect on mobile and fixed-line internet providers supplying Somaliland by Thursday morning, corroborating user reports of outages in multiple cities in the autonomous region which lies north of Somalia."

On Wednesday, the Somaliland government reached an agreement with opposition leaders from UCID and Waddani parties to allow demonstrations against the government for delaying presidential elections.

The opposition and the government have agreed that the protests should take place at the party headquarters between 7:00 am and 12:00 noon and that the opposition leaders will be accountable for any issues the protestors cause, the Minister stated at a press conference in Hargeisa.

Opposition leaders are demanding that the government hold elections on November 13.

While protest organizers have not provided information on the developments or how many people will attend, security experts expect demonstrations to be held in public areas around Hargeisa, Burao, Berbera, Gabiley, and Erigavo.

Residents are worried that the protests, which will almost certainly attract a heavy police presence, may descend into clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
