PM says indirect elections cannot continue to be Somalia’s electoral model

Friday April 29, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has called on both chambers of parliament to ensure one-person vote elections to avoid concentrating power in the hands of a few people.

"I have never seen an election season in Somalia like the current one, which I lead. You are witnesses to what happened. Indirect elections are not sustainable for the nation in the future," said Prime Minister Roble.

He added that the country's security situation has worsened over the years, adding that those responsible were preoccupied with private interests.

The Prime Minister called for parliamentarians to consider who would be the next president carefully.

Somalia's lawmakers concluded the parliament's leadership election this week and are now slated to elect a new president in the coming weeks.

Sheikh Adan Madobe was declared the speaker of the Lower House. At the same time, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, a long-serving senator and a vocal critic of the government, was re-elected as the upper house speaker.
