Thanks to my colleagues for their confidence in me", committee chairman Abdirizak Omar Mohamed said following the vote.
Mogadishu (HOL) - The organizing committee for the election of the Lower House Speaker met in Mogadishu on Sunday to elect their chairperson and deputy chairperson.
Abdirizak Omar Mohamed was elected chairman of the parliamentary speaker election committee with five votes, while the runner-up, Mohamed Abukar Abdi, who received four votes elected secretary of the committee.
Somalia's Lower House formed the committee on Thursday during its first parliamentary session. The committee is tasked with expediting the process of electing the Speaker of the 275-member House of the People and ensuring the smooth running of the election process.
On Saturday, a similar organizing committee met to elect the chairperson and deputy chairperson charged with organizing the election for the Speaker of the Upper House. Senator Adan Abdinasir Mohamed was elected Chairman of the Upper House Election Committee, while Senator Samsam Dahir Mohamud was selected to chair the Candidate Registration Committee. Senator Farhan Ali Hussein was elected as the Chairman of the Finance Committee.
A timeline for the elections for the Speakers of both Houses of Parliament is expected in the coming days.
