Nairobi (HOL)- A prominent Muslim human rights advocate was allegedly abducted on Friday by suspected officers drawn from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) in his home along Ngong road.
Prof Hassan Nadwa's family and community leaders now demand answers from the government on his whereabouts.
"Islamic scholar, academician, and lawyer Prof Hassan Nadwa had been missing for two days now following a raid by ATPU officers at his home along Ngong Road," a statement by the family read in part.
"The people who came here were so rough. It felt like a robbery. We have looked for him (Prof. Nadwa), and we have not found him," said a family member at home.
Nadwa was a Human Rights advocate who always wanted everyone to have their stands respected.
Nairobi's largest Mosque believes that Nadwa's investigations into recent abductions by security officials may have led to his own kidnapping.
"Islamic scholar, academician, & lawyer Prof. Hassan Nadwa has been missing since yesterday following a raid by ATPU officers at his home along Ngong Road. He was following up on a case of two people who suspected security agents abducted," Jamia Mosque tweeted on Friday.
Yusuf Hassan Abdi, the Federal MP for the Kamukunji Constituency, has demanded his release.
"When you pick up a well-respected citizen from the streets of our capital, and he disappears without any trace, it clearly shows our government is not doing its job. "
"We are demanding as Muslims that this particular person be brought back to his home or brought to court."
Sheikh Abdullahi Abdi said Muslims are "under siege" by criminals who have no regard for the rule of law. He contends that over 40 people have disappeared this year, and over 300 have been abducted in five to six years.
"We are Kenyans and have just as much right as any other Kenyan protected by the constitution."
