Tuesday March 2, 2021

MOGADISHU (HOL) - The international community has lauded the continued engagement between Prime Minister Mohamed Roble and the opposition leaders and called for concrete agreements to allow the elections to go ahead.

“After the successful meeting on 25 February, the partners appeal to the Prime Minister and the Council of Presidential Candidates to make further progress,” a  joint statement by the UN and other foreign missions in the country.

The international community also called on President Mohamed Farmaajo and Federal Member State leaders to meet soonest to finalise the framework developed by the joint technical committee which met in Baidoa last month.

“We also urge FGS and FMS leaders to hold the planned summit in the coming few days to confirm implementation plans for the 17 September agreement and conclude the review of the 16 February Technical Committee proposals so that the electoral process can begin without further delay," the statement said.

Villa Somalia announced Tuesday another round of meeting with the FMS leaders slated for Thursday noting the main focus will be on the Baidoa report.

Both the opposition, Jubbaland and Puntland had demanded the resignation of Farmaajo as a precondition for the talks.

Meanwhile, the US has also voiced its calls for the country’s leadership to resolve the ongoing row.

“Time is running out. We urge the FGS and FMS leaders to meet now, do the right thing for the people of Somalia, and complete this election,” the US embassy said in a tweet.
