MOGADISHU (HOL) - Voting in Jubbaland Parliament commenced Thursday morning with the election of Ilyaas Badal Gaboose as the first senator in the 2021 elections.
Senator-elect Gaboose got 55 votes while his only challenger Mohamed Ahmed Sayiid garnered 17 votes. A third contender, Sharmarke Mohamed Abdi pulled out of the race at the last minute.
Voting is currently underway for the remaining three seats. Jubbaland president Ahmed Madobe is yet to unveil the list of candidates for the remaining four seats.
Jubbaland now becomes the first state to conduct elections which were set to kick off on July 25 according to the elections schedule issued by the Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET).
