Mogadishu (HOL) - Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble left for the United Kingdom Monday to attend the Global Education Summit that will be taking place in London later this week.

The two-day - The Global Education Summit: Financing GPE 2021-2025 - the event will be co-hosted by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The summit aims to raise $5 billion in 5 years for the Global Partnership for Education, an organization dedicated to education in some of the world's most impoverished communities. The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) believes that the funds will ensure that 175 million children receive an education.

However, the UK Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, James Cleverly, believes that as much as $210 billion will be needed to address the issues facing access to education globally effectively.

"We need to see other donor countries dig deep, in fact, dig deeper than ever before," said the minister, who added that other governments, as well as international bodies, philanthropic institutions and private companies, should "play their part."

Cleverly said the UK would commit at least £400 million to the GPE.

Somalia recently approved a $40 million International Developmental Association (IDA) project that would deliver top-tier education to girls from the most disadvantaged communities. It will be the first significant investment in Somalia's education sector since the collapse of Somalia's central government over 30 years ago.
