Mogadishu (HOL) - Police in Mogadishu have arrested a man on Thursday suspected of a young girl's rape and murder. The spokesperson for the local police force, Sadiq Aden Doodishe, told reporters that Bashir Mohamed Qasim has been apprehended and will stand trial.
"The accused will face justice and will be brought before a competent court."
The girl's mother, Maryan, says that neighbours informed her that her daughter had been abducted while working as a domestic labourer washing clothes for another family.
Investigators believed that the young girl was lured out of her home by the suspect, who told her he was her uncle and promised to buy her ice cream at a local shop.
The young girl was found shortly after. She had been raped and strangled to death.
Maryan, the victim's mother, expressed relief that the suspect is in custody and is pushing the Somali government to execute him by firing squad so that she can receive closure and justice. The young girl was Maryan's only daughter.
Decades of conflict have weakened institutions and have created a culture of violence and impunity in Somalia.
