U.S heightens alert on Somalia, says 20 ‘may have died’ in ongoing turmoil

MOGADISHU(HOL) - The United States has reiterated its alert warning its citizens against travelling to Somalia barely a day after unrest started in Somalia.

In a statement, US government said during the clashes between government forces and the opposition on Thursday and Friday over 20 people were killed or injured.

An RPG hit a restaurant within the airport area, destroying the area.

International community have been pressing both Somali government and opposition to ease the tension and hold dialogue to end differences.

UN and IGAD have both strongly condemned the growing hostility and extreme belligerence in political contests in Somalia.

In  separate statements, the blocs said  continued  impasse  over  the  upcoming elections  and the emerging pre- election violence  increase  the  risks  of  instability and  threaten to erode all the  gains  made  in  the  peace  and  state  building  processes.

Friday protests and subsequent clashes in the capital have displaced dozens of people from their homes as both sides have intensified counter-qttacks.

In a statement, the opposition vowed to continue with rallies to pressure President Mohamed  Abdullahi Farmajo to vacate the palace.
