Opposition calls for Transition Council as Farmaajo’s term lapses

Monday February 8, 2021

MOGADISHU (HOL) - The Council of Presidential Candidates (CPC) has called for the formation of a Transitional Council noting that it no longer recognizes Mohamed Farmaajo as the legitimate president of Somalia.

The CPC which brings together 14 presidential candidates among them two former presidents said Farmaajo should cease to be president and a new team set up to oversee the transition process.

According to the statement, the Transitional Council which should draw membership from the speakers of the Federal Parliament, CPC representatives, Federal Member State leaders and civil society should convene upon formation to draw a roadmap for elections.

The roadmap, CPC said will be based on the September 17 agreement between Farmaajo and Federal Member State leaders.

The Council also urged security forces including the military not to take further instructions from Farmaajo and instead observe the law and order. Farmaajo, the Council said, should not by-pass the constitution lest he lose previleges as a former president.

The term of Farmaajo in office lapses today in line with constitutional dictates. There is no agreement yet on the fate of elections after the Dhusamareb rounds, the last which concluded on Friday failed to yield an agreement.

Meanwhile UN head in Somalia James Swan reportedly engaged FMS leaders yesterday with initial reports indicating there are plans for another meeting in Mogadishu to be overseen by the international community.
