Somalia ratifies agreements to protect workers' rights

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali government has ratified seven international agreements on labour rights at a virtual ceremony held at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs on Tuesday with the International Labour Organization Director-General (ILO), Guy Ryder and other officials.

The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Mr. Duran Ahmed Farah, said that Somalia had reached a new milestone.

"It is a historical event. Somalia today is a member of seven international conventions on labour rights." Mr. Duran said before adding, "The agreements are a commitment to employee development and rights."

The agreements signed today by the International Labor Organization (ILO) include Labor Health and Safety, Migrant Workers' Rights, Combating Harassment and Harassment of Working Women and Tripartite Cooperation, Government, Employers and Workers.

"It is remarkable that Somalia has ratified seven ILO agreements." said the ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, "This move demonstrates Somalia's commitment to promoting peace and resilience through effective work," he added.

In late December last year, the Somali Council of Ministers ratified seven treaties as part of the ILO's agreements fundamental to principles and labour rights.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Secretary-General of the Somali Trade Unions, Mr. Omar Faruk Osman, the Director-General of the Ministry, Mr. Abdullahi Mohamed Ali and other officials of the Ministry. Somali Government in Switzerland, Abyan Mohamed Salah.
