The death was confirmed by Trans Mountain Corporation, which said that an employee with SA Energy - one of its contractors - died as a result of being struck by a piece of equipment.

Ian Anderson, president and CEO of Trans Mountain Corporation, offered his thoughts and prayers to the Sahal's family.

"This is a tragic incident, and I know that staff and contractors at both SA Energy and Trans Mountain join me in extending our deepest sympathies to the worker's family," he said.

His colleagues and friends remember Sahal as a caring mentor and a foreman who helped many young Somali's get into the union.

Mohamud Barre, who worked with Sahal for several years, said that he met Sahal immediately after joining Local92. He told HOL that he was his first foreman and never hesitated to assist him when he was learning the ropes.

"He was a great mentor, and I remember his dedication to his family the most. On the job, he was always there to advise me with good work habits and did so for many others. What happened to him was a tragedy."

Mohamud has set up a GoFundMe page to assist Sahal's family with funeral expenses and assistance.

Sahal is survived by his wife and four young children - including his two-month-old newborn.
