MOGADISHU (HOL) - A hardcore criminal who was serving a ten year jail term but escaped and killed two people during a jail break in Mogadishu Central prison in August has been sentenced to death.
A military court in Mogadishu Sunday delivered its verdict against the suspect slapping six prison guards with various jail terms.
The court sentenced Mubarak Ibrahim in absentia to death for escaping from prison and killing a soldier identified as Mohamed Yusuf Tohow and a civilian named Mukhtar Abdullahi Muse.
Ibrahim escaped during the attack in August and killed two people according to police.
The court also sentenced six prison guards to jail terms of between six months and five years for their involvement in the August 12 attack at Central Jail that left at least six people dead among them prison guards and inmtes.
Another suspect, Mohamed Nur Isak who was accused of smuggling weapons into the prison after being permitted to supply the prison with foodstuff and other sanitary items for inmates was sentenced to five years.
Isak had been accused by authorities of stealing money from the public after forex business he used to operate went under.
The 11th suspect, Abdi Ahmed Mohamud, a guard at the prison was acquitted for lack of sufficient evidence linking him to the offense.
