Wajir MCAs file notice to impeach governor Mohamed Abdi

Thursday August 20, 2020

A section of members of the Wajir County Assembly on Wednesday filed a notice to impeach Governor Mohamed Abdi on grounds of runaway corruption and abuse of office.

The notice was moved by Benane ward representative Abdi Mohamed Sheikh, who called on the clerk of the county assembly to fast-track the process.

The latest development comes after weeks of negotiation between elders, political leaders, and MCAs.

“Kindly find attached notices of motion regarding the impeachment of Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud for onward transmission and approval by the speaker,” read the notice.

Mr Sheikh said that MCAs, believe the county boss has violated the constitution and abused his office contrary to the law. He further said that the motion has met the basic prerequisites as provided for by the law.

He urged Wajir residents to support the impeachment process.
“We, therefore, seek the support of the people of Wajir as we execute our mandate,” he said.

Bute ward representative Adan Ismail said that it was now upon the office of the clerk to peruse the motion and forward it to the speaker who will, in turn, submit to the house business committee for consideration of debate in the assembly.

He, however, could not divulge more details on the contents of the 12-page document and called for patience.

“This is a procedural motion that requires steps as per the statues provided and it’s our appeal that you wait for that time when the substantive motion will be tabled so that you will understand better its content,” he said.

Mr Shalle Sheikh Mursal, the clerk of the assembly, confirmed that he received the notice. He said it was signed by 23 out of the 49 MCAs.

He added that his office will authenticate the signatures and verify all the information in the document first before presenting it to the speaker for approval if it meets the provisions of the standing orders and county government act.

Wajir governor and a section of the MCAs have been embroiled in a number of disputes over running of the county since he took power.
