CAPE TOWN (HOL) - Somali business community in South Africa has teamed up to support government efforts in providing humanitarian relief aid to communities adversely affected by the ongoing lockdown in the country.
The traders drawn from different parts of the country have come together in what they termed a call to give back to their host nation and have contributed dozens of food items and essential household items to affected communities.
According to a video documenting the relief efforts, the supplies will go a long way in addressing humanitarian crisis affecting South Africans with low incomes and forced to stay home because of a lock-down imposed by the government to curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease.
South Africa is the most affected country in Africa in terms of the spread of COVID-19 with the country recording over 4000 cases to date out of which 93 have died of the disease.
Somali traders in South Africa have severally in the past suffered xenophobic attacks with some losing their lives as others have their shops vandalized.
But they have decided to forget those injustices and support their host country in battling the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
