MOGADISHU (HOL) - Al-Shabaab militants Monday launched two coordinated attacks targeting an Italian convoy in Mogadishu and a U.S run military base in the country’s Lower Shabelle region.
Witnesses said an Italian convoy travelling near Jalle-Siyad academy in Mogadishu was hit by landmine suspected to have been planted on the roadside. There was no immediate report of casualties.Meanwhile, in Baledogle military base some 90 kilometres south of Mogadishu, Al-Shabaab militants launched another attack driving two vehicles loaded with explosives into the U.S run military base.
The base serves as a training camp for Somali Special Forces. There was no immediate information on possible casualties.
Barely 24 hours ago, an AMISOM convoy drove into a landmine around SOS village in Hilwaa district in the outskirts of Mogadishu. Two civilians were injured in the attack.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the Balidogle attack.
The attacks come amid sustained military offensives in the Lower Shabelle region as Somali forces increase military activities targeting the group.
