Mogadishu (HOL) - A massive fire broke out in Mogadishu's Bakara Market on late Thursday night.
Residents of Mogadishu tell HOL that the blaze began close to 2 am, firefighters were still battling the fire. The blaze which lit the night sky could be seen from many parts of the city.
The fire damaged property took down sections of the open-air market. It has been reported that sporadic gunshots by the security could be heard near the market area. The gunshots are intended to prevent looting activities in the market area.
It is not immediately clear the extent of the damages caused by the fire, but one witness who spoke to HOL said the damage and destruction caused by the fire is the worst I have ever seen.
Bakara, the economic hub of Mogadishu has had several fires break out in its history and merchants and traders are sure to feel the impact of this latest blaze.
