UN, partners welcome Galmudug pact, call for continued efforts

MOGADISHU (HOL) -The UN and other international partners in Somalia have welcomed the power sharing deal in Galmudug that will see Alhu Sunna Wal Jamaa get 20 seats in new parliament.

The partners said in a new statement the signing of the pact was an important step in ensuring stability in the central Somalia state which has been bedeviled by political turmoil since its founding in 2015.

“We appreciate the tireless efforts made by the Federal Government of Somalia, ASWJ leadership and other concerned stakeholders to resolve points of difference through dialogue and compromise,” the statement read in part.

It added the move was ‘An important step towards establishing a unified and stable administration in Galmudug, which will be essential in order to advance Somalia’s national priorities for 2020.”

They called for continued efforts to ensure all parties and communities in Galmudug are included in the political process.

The Federal Government announced Thursday it had reached a deal with Alhu Sunna to guarantee the group 20 seats in the new parliament whose elections were slated for this month.

The agreement will last for the duration of the new parliament which runs for four years.
