MOGADISHU (HOL) – Somali president fiercely attacked opposition politicians Thursday, accusing them of playing a double game in ongoing political challenges with the government which is struggling to contain a new surge in violence in the country which is recovering from decades of civil unrest.

In recent weeks, opposition politicians have joined hands in their criticism against the government’s policies, laying blame on it for security lapses that led to new attacks by militants and also faulted at it for political crisis pitting the government against regional states.

Responding to the accusations, President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo took aim at the opposition politicians, slamming them for misportraying the country under pretext of criticism against the government.

“The fuming politician; they always say the international community should come and act as a go-between for us, they always talk in yelp,” the president said angrily.

“They also say that this country is shattered beyond repair and that our army is routed. That’s not a conventional Somali wisdom.” He said in his scathing attack on the opposition politicians.

With dramatic flair, the president has also accused opposition politicians of undermining public confidence, calling for them to work in the interest of the country.

His remarks come days after the country’s regional leaders have skipped a meeting convened by the president after the five regional states announced they severed working relations with the government which they accused of failing to deliver on its promises and lacking mechanism for sharing the country’s resources.
