Somalia to recruit more intelligence officers to secure capital

MOGADISHU (HOL) – Somali government is to recruit extra intelligence officers to boost security of the capital, Mogadishu amid surge in assassinations and attacks by suspected militants in recent months.

Earlier this year, many intelligence officers have been dismissed and others were integrated into the police to in what officials referred as a ‘cleanup’ operation to improve spy service amid long-held suspicions that al-Shabab spies had infiltrated the agency.

Responding to the security concerns, 3000 soldiers have already been recruited to reinforce security forces providing the city’s security.

According to officials, the new soldiers would be deployed across the city to participate efforts aimed at security Mogadishu and will help the overall security coordination.

Mogadishu is currently struggling to deal with a deadly insurgency by the Al-Qaeda linked al-Shabab group which continues attacks against the government and African Union forces supporting it.

However, Inadequate security personnel, poor intelligence and corruption have been blamed for the authorities' failure to prevent attacks by militants.
