MPLS: Warsame endorses Tim Walz for Governor

Wednesday May 9, 2018
Minneapolis (HOL) - Minneapolis City councillor Abdi Warsame announced that he has endorsed Congressman Tim Walz in his race for Governor of Minnesota.
The Ward 6 councillor said that Walz’s close ties to the trade sector and union leaders will benefit his constituents as the baby boomer generation exit the workforce.
“In the near future our state is expected to face a serious employment crises,” Warsame warned. “With the baby boomer generation planning to heavily retire from the trades and the growing tech industry within the next few years, there will be more jobs available than qualified workers to fill them.”
He added that the vacuum caused by the boomers can be filled by immigrant communities who historically suffered from higher unemployment rates.
“Congressman Walz and Representative Flanagan understand the importance of a gubernatorial administration that supports the state’s immigrant communities and prioritizes closing the opportunity gap. We have a chance to address both the high unemployment rates in immigrant communities and communities of color, as well as to solve the looming employment crises by getting those communities ready to fill these positions. Tim’s close ties to the trades and other unions will be instrumental in that solution.”
For his part, Congressman Walz said that he was excited to receive Warsame’s endorsement and lauded development projects like the Cedar-Riverside Opportunity Centre that support the Somali community.
“The (Cedar-Riverside) Opportunity Center has trained and placed hundreds of Minneapolis residents, particularly from the East African community, in good-paying jobs in its first year of operations.”
Minneapolis has one of the largest concentration of Somali’s outside Africa, a stat that did not go unnoticed by the Walz-Flanagan ticket. He promised that if elected, the East African community in Minneapolis and Minnesota will “get the support it deserves.”
