Wajir lifts meat ban, says Rift Valley Fever contained

Saturday July 7, 2018

Wajir County government has lifted ban on consumption of meat and milk imposed because of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) outbreak.

The county Health Chief Officer Abdirahman Mathow said the disease has been contained.

A task force formed to stop RVF from spreading reached the decision on Thursday, ending the ban that was imposed on June 7.

Six people and hundreds of livestock have died in the county since the outbreak that was first reported in Basir, Eldas Sub-County.

Camels, goats and sheep were the most affected.

Many of the victims affected by the virus were men, aged between 21 and 30 years, because of their active participation in the slaughtering of animals.

According to earlier reports from the health department, majority of the victims reported contact with meat and many of them either slaughter animals or distribute meat.

Movement of animals from the affected areas in the county had also been curtailed by the task force.

Addressing journalists on Thursday Mr Mathow said RVF has been contained but lifting of the ban is subject to review should the situation change.
