Germany warns Kenya against late changes to elections laws

Sunday October 8, 2017

Germany on Saturday warned Kenya against changing it's elections laws just days before the repeat presidential polls on October 26.

It said the Jubilee sponsored election amendments are ill-timed.

On Monday, foreign envoys raised similar concern saying the changes to the election laws is against the global best practice.

Germany also urged NASA and Jubilee leaders to tone down their political hard stance, saying the confrontations are creating unnecessary tensions.

"This dispute is putting the democratic electoral process at risk. The Kenyan economy is already suffering as a consequence of the uncertainty in the country. There is a danger of escalation." read a statement from the Embassy.

They also warned the opposition against making excessive demands to the IEBC.

"This not the time to make excessive demands of the independent electoral commission or to change electoral laws at short notice." read part of the statement.

The envoys, in a candid warning, said their countries are reviewing Kenya's political situation that will inform their next action.

"We are watching what the politicians are saying and doing. Some leaders are stoking community tensions and they must stop. We will use our constitutions to bar these politicians from travelling to our countries," US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec said on Monday.
