Al-Shabaab publicly executes four men for espionage

Mogadishu (HOL) - Al-Shabaab militants publicly executed four men accused of spying for the country’s Western-backed government.

The al-Qaeda-linked militant insurgency group confirmed the executions, which took place on Monday after the men were found guilty by an Al-Shabaab court in Buaale district of Middle Jubba region, 304 km southwest of the Mogadishu.

“The court ruled on their cases and four of the men were executed publicly in Buaale district according to the Sharia this Monday morning, the four admitted they were spies for the government of Somalia” reads a statement posted on a pro-Alshabaab website.

A resident who asked to remain anonymous said that they were told by the militants to watch the execution.

The victims were identified Abdirisack Hashi Abbas, Mustafa Moalim Hassan, Mohamed Aba Mayow and Omar Adar Omar.

Al-Shabaab has vowed to fight to depose the Somali federal government.

In recent months, the group stepped up its attacks against civilian and government installations.

In a period of less a month, the militants killed over 400 people mainly civilians.

Last Thursday, 11 people were injured in bomb explosion barely five days after six militants stormed Nasa-Hablod2 Hotel following VBIED detonated at the entrance, leading the death of 23 people including government officials.
