Fighting between SNA and Al-Shabaab kills at least 4 militants

Mogadishu (HOL) - Fierce fighting between Al-Shabaab and Somali government security forces in Lower Shabelle has killed at least four Al Shabaab fighters early Thursday morning, according to a local district commissioner.

Local sources tell HOL that the began after Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Somali National Army (SNA) base in Barawe killing government soldiers and possibly civilians.

Omar Madowe, the district commissioner for the area told HOL that SNA troops battled back and killed four of the attackers, including two foreign fighters. He did not specify the nationality of the slain fighters.

Al-Shabaab militants have claimed that they killed up to 15 soldiers and have destroyed vehicles belonging to the SNA although this claim cannot be independently verified.

Al-Shabaab regularly inflates the number of those they claimed to have killed for propaganda purposes.

Barawe also known as Brava, is an ancient port town less than 200km from Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab and government security forces have fought over control of the town many times in recent years.
