Mogadishu (HOL) - More than 300 people have died due to cholera in the last 3 days in eastern Ethiopia, according to a press release issued by the Ogaden National Liberation Front.

The separatist rebel group added that a thousand more are in dire straits without access to medicine or health support. Like Somalia, the rural areas are the hardest hit although the ONLF says most of the major towns in the Ogaden are being affected.

The most affected areas are Tarar (Dhegabuur), Nogob, Qorahay (Qabridaharre), and Shabelle. There are reports of cholera in Doolo, Adhere and Libaan as well.

The ONLF says that villagers are finding their families members dead in remote areas, sometimes mauled by wild animals

The ONLF “conservatively estimates" that more that 2000 have died in rural Ogaden.

The ONLF directly appeals to AU, EY, USA, OIC, ICC and other donors as well as the World Health Organization, and the UN agencies to take action in the Ogaden.

According to the ONLF, 300 people have died in 72 hours due to cholera
