KDF, police escape death in Wajir explosion

Tuesday June 6, 2017

Kenyan security officers escaped unhurt after a roadside bomb hit their convoy in Gerille, Wajir County.

According to the county's Divisional Criminal Investigations Officer, Mr Michael Mbayi Mwenze, Kenya Defence Forces soldiers and their Kenya Police counterparts were carrying out a joint operation after suspected Al-Shabaab militants were spotted.

NO CASUALTY

The convoy had six vehicles, four belonging to the KDF and the others to the National Police Service; the convoy included two Armoured Personnel Carriers.

Mr Mwenze said that the vehicle that was leading the convoy, a land cruiser, ran over an improvised explosive devise.

As a result, Mr Mwenze said the team started firing mortars for about 15 minutes to defend themselves from possible attack. But no one fired back.

STAY VIGILANT

The operation covered 21 kilometres within Kenya and 18 kilometres into Somalia.
There were no casualties.

"We are grateful that we did not suffer any casualties. However, this is a warning to the officers to be be more careful when carrying out their operations," he said.
