Samsung has launched its latest flagship in the Galaxy Note series in an event held in New York, United States.

The phablet named the Note 8 is a successor to the ‘explosive’ and now discontinued Galaxy Note 7, one of the greatest disasters in consumer electronics history.

DUAL CAMERA

A key feature of the Note 8 is its dual back camera setup, which puts it in direct competition with Apple's iPhone 7+ that has a similar rear camera feature.

Both of the rear cameras of Note 8 are equipped with optical image stabilisation with live focus and dual capture.

They are 12MP each, with one taking wide angle shots while the other is a telephoto lens.

The dual setup also adds stunning depth of field effects to images, with Samsung calling it their most powerful smartphone camera yet.

PROCESSOR

The biggest upside, among others, of owning a Note device has always been its massive screen and the new Note 8 certainly lives up to that legacy with its 6.3” QHD super AMOLED infinity display with very slim bezels.

Its bottom chin is much like that of the Galaxy S8+, with more angular edges while the top bit spots an array of sensors and an 8MP AF front camera.

Powering the device is one of two 64-bit Octacore processors with different clocking speeds depending on the country and carrier.

The processor is coupled with a 6GB LPDDR4 RAM and a 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of ROM with external SD card expansion slot of up to 256GB.

BATTERY

The device runs on Android Nougat (7.1.1).

Following the catastrophe that befell the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung had to get it right this time with the Note 8 by employing what it calls the 8-point Battery check to ensure safety.

Speaking of which, its capacity is 3300 mAh, 200 mAh shy of the one in the previous Note 7.

The fingerprint sensor is located at the back of the device next to the two cameras and the flash.

This device also comes with a smarter S-pen with even more functionality for a better user experience.

MINI PC

The Note 8 certainly seems to be living up to its theme ‘Do bigger things’ quite literally with the Samsung DeX, which enables users to connect to a larger display unit, a keyboard and mouse, turning the device into a PC.

Samsung says it has enhanced DeX capabilities for the Note 8.

The Galaxy Note8 will be available starting in mid-September and will be offered in Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Maple Gold and Deepsea Blue.

Samsung Mobile Kenya told the Nation the Galaxy Note 8 would retail at Sh99,999.
