Mogadishu (HOL) - At least three people have been killed by a car bomb in Somalia’s capital after it was detonated on a busy road, according to officials and witnesses.

Witnesses said that they heard a loud explosion on Maka Al-Mukarama road just after evening prayers. The car bomb explosion near the Darul Shifa hospital and Hotel Ambassador claimed the lives of at least one person and injured many others according to police.

"So far, I have seen one dead civilian. She was a woman. One man was also injured," Mohamed Hussein, a police officer, told Reuters.

Officials have later confirmed that the death toll had risen to three.

Witnesses believe the car was parked on the road next to the hospital.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Security confirmed that the explosion was the result of a car bomb but declined to give more details.

There has been no claim of responsibility thus far but Al-Shabaab is widely believed to be behind the attack. The militant insurgency group has waged a deadly war against the internationally backed government and have used car bombs regularly against civilian and government installations.
