Police shot and killed an armed hostage-taker Tuesday in Amarillo, Texas, swiftly ending what authorities said began as a “workplace violence” incident at a Walmart Supercenter.

The incident began around 11:30 a.m. local time and was over about 90 minutes later.

"Suspect has been shot by APD SWAT and is apparently dead. Hostages inside are safe,” Amarillo police said in a statement via Twitter. The Randall County Sheriff's office later confirmed the suspect was killed.

No other people were killed or injured in the incident. Police didn't immediately release the armed hostage-taker's identity or any additional details.

"We want to thank everyone who helped spread the word today during the intense hostage situation at Walmart. Your shares helped us keep the area clear during an extremely dangerous situation...and helped us inform the public in a very timely manner," the sheriff's office said in a statement via Facebook.

A Walmart spokeswoman thanked police for their response and said everyone was safe.

“As soon as we heard about the situation at our store in Amarillo, Texas, we acted immediately. All customers and our two associates who were held hostage are safe," Deisha Barnett said in a statement. "This was a very difficult situation and we are thankful for the quick response from law enforcement.”
