He was arrested on Friday evening.

The former NTV reporter was expected to appear in a Kiambu court yesterday morning for the alleged misuse of a communication device and disseminating “sensitive” material relating to the al Shabaab attack the KDF camp in El Adde, Somalia.

He spent the weekend at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations after being moved from the Muthaiga police station, where he recorded a statement.

“I was ready to appear in court over the accusations, but the police instead took me back to the Muthaiga police station. Moments later, I was released,” he told the Star after his release.

The police kept his mobile phone and told him to report back to them in two weeks.

Juma said he was treated well while in detention.

“They never told me what my crime was,” he said.

After his release, Juma wrote on his Facebook page: “Ooh ooh Kanu yajenga nchi, Am Free at last.”

These were the words of the Kanu party anthem during single-party rule.

He flashed his index finger along with the post.

“For those asking what the index finger stands for, it is a sign to indicate the oneness of God who solves our tribulations,” Juma said.

The Kanu one-finger salute went out of style in the multiparty era.
