Somalia commends KSA’s anti-terror role

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia is leading the fight against terrorism and Muslims around the world should unite and defend the culture of Islam, Somali Foreign Minister Abdusalam H. Omer has said.

In an interview with Arab News on the sidelines of the emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) here on Thursday, he said Somalia is not only against Iran, but all those regimes that interfere in the affairs of other countries.

“We are against Iran in particular, and other regimes in general which directly or indirectly support extremism. This was the main reason for Somalia to sever its ties with Iran,” he said.

Somalia is also a victim of terrorism and Saudi Arabia’s support to the country in this regard is “commendable,” said Omer.

Armed terrorists on Thursday attacked a beachside restaurant in Mogadishu, killing 17 people. Al-Shabab extremists claimed responsibility for the carnage.

Omer said the extraordinary meeting in Jeddah was crucial in bringing all brotherly Muslim countries onto a single platform to discuss the problems that are faced by the Islamic world, especially the Gulf region. 

He said that not only Saudi Arabia and Somalia, but the whole world has been affected by terrorism. 

“Somalia has been suffering from terrorism for a very long time. However, Saudi Arabia, which is our brotherly country, is helping us in the fight against this scourge,” he said.

Omer said that Makkah and Madinah are the two holiest places for Muslims in the world and there is no doubt that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman is taking good care of them. 

“My message on this important occasion is that we have to remain vigilant and united. We should not only defend our countries and peoples, but fight for the security of the whole world,” he added.
