EXTENDING the tenure of current IEBC commissioners will require a referendum as stated in the constitution. National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale wants Parliament to extend the commissioners’ term by three months to “comfortably” oversee next year’s general election slated for August 8.

“Once the House resumes its sittings on February 9, we will advise the leadership of Parliament to sanction the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee that oversees IEBC to propose changes to the constitution to extend the commissioners’ term,” Duale said yesterday.

However, Cord coprincipals Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka want new commissioners appointed. The constitution states IEBC commissioners’ term is six years.

The commissioners’ term will expire on November 9 next year or five days later considering they were sworn in on later.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, a Cord member, said Jubilee should adopt a bipartisan approach to solve the “crisis”. “That’s why we have been asking the President and his jubilee team to come to the table for us to discuss the electoral infrastructure,” he said.
