President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for religious tolerance among Kenyans.

Addressing Muslim faithful during Maulid celebrations at the Riyadha Mosque on Lamu Island on Thursday night, President Kenyatta said different faiths should respect each another as this will guarantee peace in the country.

“I personally respect all religions. I ask religious leaders to preach peace. None of us is different from the other and there should be no segregation because of colour, race or tribe as we are all Kenyans”, he said.

President Kenyatta also said Muslim youth applying for national identity cards should not be harassed.

“I am issuing an order that there should be no more harassment of Muslim youth when they want to get (national) identity cards,” he said.

Addressing a public rally at Mkunumbi Secondary School earlier, President Kenyatta said departments dealing with registration of persons should devise proper methods of vetting applicants without discrimination.

“All Kenyans should be treated the same way. There should be no targeting of a particular section of the society because we are all citizens of the same country”, he said.
