Two police officers were arrested Thursday morning in the Nairobi suburb of Eastleigh. They are suspected of extorting money from local residents.
Kenya's The Star newspaper reports that the arrest comes after residents made complaints to authorities that the officers extorted money from residents for allegedly not having identification documents.
One of the officers is a member of the General Service Unit Training school while the other works with the State House.
The two officers are being questioned before they are charged in court.
Residents of Eastleigh have long complained of endemic corruption within the Kenyan police ranks. The mostly-Somali enclave is regularly targeted by Kenyan security forces for extortion and arbitrary detainment. Many believe the corruption is institutionalized as officers are rarely reprimanded for their actions.
