The first memorial service to mark the first anniversary of the Garissa University College massacre of 147 is currently underway in Garrisa and Moi university, Eldoret.

Students from 52 Universities will also hold a special service at KICC on Saturday afternoon.

The students will light candles to represent each student who lost their life as well as symbolize peace.

Chairman of universities and colleges peace association of Kenya, Allan Chacha said the service will start at 4 PM and end at 9 PM.

“We will light the candles at 7 pm to represent the lives of those who have left us,” he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, Inspector General Joseph Boinnet and religious leaders are expected to attend the service.

“The government has assured us that there will be adequate security,” Chacha said.

Universities organising the memorial include UoN, Moi, Kenyatta, Mount Kenya, Garissa and Tangaza University College.

Regarding lighting candles for each victim, Chacha said: "Uhuru, being the head of state, will light one big candle to symbolise peace in the country."

"We do not want this to happen again. It was a big blow to the education sector and we vowed to stand together to fight terror."

A peace group comprising college and university students has began a sensitisation programme to achieve zero radicalisation in schools.

The university was reopened in January and improvements, including the erection of a perimeter fence with CCTV cameras, undertaken.

Garissa University college is a constituent of Moi University.

Students who survived the attack were integrated into the Moi university main campus.
