During a meeting with Somalia’s foreign minister Abdisalam Hadliye in New York on Friday, Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah reaffirmed Kuwait's support to Somalia to eradicate terrorism, according the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA.

“Kuwait was standing behind Somalia in the fight against terrorism in order to enforce security and stability nationwide.” Mr. Al-Sabah said.

The two top diplomats who met on the sidelines of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly, also discussed bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest as Somali seeks greater support to stem the deadly insurgency by Al-Shabab which has killed hundreds of people for the past few years.

Al-Shabab has stepped up attacks against the Somali government and African Union forces this year, carrying out deadly attacks, including suicide bombings and assasinations.

The group has also made gains against the allied Somali forces and African Union troops in Somalia, recapturing towns vacated by troops who have encountered numereous attacks including an attack on a remote AU base in southern, killing at least 50 soldiers.

The group’s spokesman has claimed his fighters have taken soldiers hostage, however, it showed no evidence or photos to back up its claims.
