MOGADISHU (HOL)----Unidentified gunmen have killed a Somali MP in a drive-by shooting in the Somali capital, the latest in string of attacks targeting the country’s legislative body members, officials said Saturday.
Mr. Yusuf Dirir and his colleague Abdalla Boss were attacked on the major Maka Al-Mukarama Road and later died in Hospital. Mr. Boss survived the attack which adds to the mounting security challenges for the Somali government
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, however, it carries the hallmarks of Al-Shahab group.
Witnesses told HOL that the attackers fired on the car carrying the MPs from a passing vehicle before they escaped the scene.
Somalia’s security officials said investigations were underway as security forces moved to pursue the attackers.
No comment could be reached from Somali authorities on the latest attack.
Al-Shabab fighters stepped up attacks across Somalia since the group was ousted from the capital and key strongholds including the lucrative Kismayo town.
The group have carried our series of deadly attacks including suicide attacks and drive-by shooting targetting government officials since last year.
