MINNEAPOLIS - May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the U.S. and to help increase awareness and understanding of mental health, Mayor Betsy Hodges has proclaimed May 2015 as Mental Health Month in Minneapolis. During the month of May, folks are encouraged to take the “Make it OK” pledge to help erase the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Throughout this month and beyond, the City of Minneapolis is working to raise awareness of and improve mental health in the community in a number of ways including:

·         Mayor Hodges’ Cradle to K cabinet plan identifies the need to improve mental health services for children from birth to three-years-old.

·         Minneapolis Healthy Start is sponsoring a Circle of Security training for Healthy Start partners in May to support parent-child attachment and mental well being

·         The Minneapolis Health Department’s school-based clinics are promoting mental health month through a number of activities including lunch tabling, classroom presentations andsocial media posts focused on adolescent mental health issues.

·         Creating connections between youth and mental health screenings and services

·         Working with public health partners to explore connections between mental wellbeing social connectedness, and reducing the burden of chronic health conditions.
