NAIROBI -- Four young Somalis arrested in Nairobi’s Eastliegh residential estate were charged in a Kenyan court Thursday with organised criminal activities and linking to 'al-Shabaab'.

Nairobi’s Makadara Magistrate’s Court heard that Mohamed Nuno, Mohamed Rufal, Faisal Hussein and Abdikadir Abdullahi were found planning to violently recruit people to Al-Shabaab.

They allegedly committed the offence on June 28 in Eastleigh, which is mainly inhabited by Kenyans of Somali origin.

The four were also charged that with assaulting Osman Ahmed, a student, by stabbing him in the abdomen.

The prosecution said the complainant, who is in critical condition in hospital, was coming out of the mosque after evening prayers when he was confronted by the accused who are well known to him.

The Prosecution Counsel Daniel Kingori asked the court to remand the accused for 10 days as they were arrested on Wednesday and further investigations are to be done concerning the allegations of being 'al-Shabaab' members.

The accused denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga, who ordered that due to the security of the country, the suspects be remanded at Shauri moyo police stations pending investigations and amending of the charges.

Kenya blames 'al-Shabaab' for the terror attacks, kidnappings of foreigners, and fears its tourist and business economy will be destroyed if it allows the insurgents to go on unchallenged.
