UN Security Council condemns attack on Somali education ministry headquarters
Thursday, April 16, 2015
UNITED NATIONS -- The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the attack on Somalia's education ministry headquarters in the capital Mogadishu, which killed several civilians and soldiers.
According to a press statement released here, the Security Council said any "senseless act of terrorism" in Somalia would not dent their resolve to support the peace and reconciliation process in Somalia.
Somali al-Qaida-linked militant group Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack. The attack took place Tuesday, a day after the ministry of education announced examinations and school curriculum would be centralized in Somalia.
Six soldiers and 15 civilian were killed in the attack on the government building that houses the ministry of education and also the ministry of petroleum and minerals.
Five Somali security forces and one African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) soldier were killed when they confronted the attackers who had stormed the education headquarters after destroying the wall using a bomb-laden car, according to local security official.
In this regard, the council reiterated their support to all actors working towards more peace and stability in Somalia, including AMISOM, a peace-keeping mission operated by the African Union in Somalia with the approval of the UN.
Somalia has been unstable since the collapse of central government in 1991. At present, United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and AMISOM are deployed on the ground to help establish stability across the country.
