International court schedules hearing for Kenya-Somalia maritime border case

Friday September 19, 2014

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has scheduled the first hearing into the maritime border dispute between Somalia and Kenya to be held next week, Somalia's RBC Radio reported Friday (September 19th).

"The hearing will commence next week as there are international lawyers helping Somalia to defend its legal borders against Kenya," said Abdi Hassan, a Somali official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kenyan Attorney General Githu Muigai said on Wednesday that he has assembled an international team of lawyers and experts to defend Kenya in the border dispute.

These preparations for the case come despite plans for the presidents of Kenya and Somali to meet in New York alongside the United Nations General Assembly in an attempt to reach a diplomatic solution to the crisis and avoid a protracted legal dispute.
