Residents flee clashes in southern Somalia

Tuesday, October 07, 2014

Nearly 20 families living in Jilib district in lower Jubba region of southern Somalia on Tuesday morning fled their homes, after the Somali government and African Union forces moved towards the remaining districts under Al Shabaab control as part of an offensive against the terrorist group.

Mohamed Aden Abdi, a resident of Jilib told to APA that the families, mainly women and children, had filed at bus stations in Jilib district to reach Kimanyo the capital of Jubland semi-autonomous state of Somalia.

Somali government forces along with AU peacekeeping mission forces said they will liberate the other towns in lower Shabelle region as well as its neighboring region middle Jubba region which is the only region in south and central Somalia that Al Shabaab still fully controls.

Al-Shabaab fighters have grouped in Jilib which is the district that links Mogadishu with Kismayo, and they have reportedly dug trenches in and outside the district to prevent the allied forces from reaching the district.
