Amid continued arrests and mass deportations of Somali refugees by Kenyan government, the Federal Government of Somalia announced that it would not attend an international conference focused on the plight of Somali refugees. The tripartite conference was intended to attract the attendance of Somali government, Kenya and the United Nations Refugee Agency the UNHCR, but Somalia said it has no interests to participate in such meeting in Kenya while Kenyan government was still harassing Somali refugees in its country.
The Somali Ministry for Foreign Affairs issued a press release highlighting "the terrible situation and the constant harassment facing Somali refugees living in that country", and for those reasons it has declined to take part.
The statement noted that the high level meeting on refugee matters was not in line with how Kenya is acting against Somali refugees while not respecting the international principles of refugees in particularly the 1951 Geneva Convention.
“Kenyan crackdown on Somali refugees was totally against the previous tripartite agreement jointly signed by Kenya, Somalia and the UN refugee Agency” the Somali ministry of foreign affairs said in its press statement.
