Dozens arrested after search operations in Somali capital

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali government forces and African Union peacekeepers have conducted widespread house-to-house search operations in some neighbourhoods in Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday to hunt Al Shabab militants who are suspected to be hiding in Mogadishu after they were driven out of some regions in the country.

Hundreds of heavily armed forces involved in the security check operations which began before dawn on Wednesday morning.

The operations were carried out in the Zone K neighbourhood in the Hodon district and some key areas along the industrial road north and northwest of the capital Mogadishu.

Eye witnesses told the media that the forces raided hundreds of houses and arrested scores of people mostly young.

“The Somali forces entered the houses and arrested some people, while the African Union peacekeepers were seen on streets checking cars and passersby” one eyewitness told the media adding that dozens of suspects were arrested.

According to the residents all traffic movements in the searched areas were halted for the early hours of the day.
