QC’s Ramadan projects to feed 900,000 people

Doha: Qatar Charity’s (QC) Ramadan projects will feed 900,000 people fasting in 34 countries this year. 

The countries include Palestine, Lebanon, Albania, Morocco, Bangladesh, Syria, Bosnia, Kosovo, Mali, Jordan, Tunisia, Mauritania, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Sri Lanka, India, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, Iran, Comoros, Pakistan, Indonesia, Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Niger, Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine. 

A total of 16,750 food baskets were also distributed at a cost of about QR6m, benefiting 93,750 people in Palestine, Albania, Ukraine, Bosnia, Somalia, Iraq, Niger, Yemen, Bangladesh, Benin, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Lebanon and Mauritania. 

Iftar tables were organised for 400 poor and elderly people in the Gaza Strip, seven collective banquets were for orphans and their families and people with disabilities and prisoners benefitting 2,700 people.

QC will also distribute food to 16,200 poor families and families of orphans across the Gaza Strip in cooperation with 62 local organisations. Each meal contains a plate of cooked rice with a chicken and yogurt for three people, benefitting around 48,600 people. 

The collective Iftars in the Gaza Strip amounted to 17,550 meals for 51,300 people. 

In Mauritania, Iftar tables targeted orphans and poor families sponsored by the QC Mauritania Office, as well as students and those with special needs, including the blind in the first week of the holy month.

Iftars targeted areas, including the capital of Nouakchott, with a focus on slum dwellers and highly populated areas, worshipers at mosques, students, patients at National Hospital, poor families in the city of Zouérat in the north, L’youn in the east and the town of Bustaila on the border with Mali, where people are suffering severe poverty and lack of social services and facilities, as well as in the city of Brina and the historic city of Chinguet. 

Iftar baskets were provided to beneficiaries and included rice, sugar, oil, dates, pretzels and milk powder. 

A total of 1,000 families of orphans in Nouakchott and cities across the state of Atrarzah, 200 people with disabilities, including the blind, in Nouakchott, 600 worshippers in mosques in Zouerat, L’youn and the state of Atarara, 500 students in Mahazer in the municipality of Brina, the village of Bab ul Fath and Ibrahim’s shrine, around 3,000 poor families in Zouérat, Chinguetti, Nouakchott, L’youn and villages and centres of Muhammadiyah, Brina, Bustalah, Tamshkt and 350 visitors at the hospital benefitted from Iftar tables. 

About 20,000 meals are expected to be provided by QC in Mauritania, in addition to 500 food baskets. 

In Kosovo, QC distributed 2,000 food baskets, benefiting 10,000 orphans and poor families, people with disabilities and students. Baskets included oil, beans, rice, pasta, sugar and tea, among others. The office also held collective Iftar tables for the poor.

This year’s budget for Ramadan projects has risen by about QR3,000,000 compared to last year. 

QC’s Ramadan projects this year are valued at QR27m for 1,352,750 expected beneficiaries.
